The Galveston Historical Foundation invites you to participate in a series of historic preservation demonstration classes designed to enlighten participants on a variety of topics. The cost of all seven classes is $45 for GHF members and $50 for nonmembers. Individual sessions are $8 each for members and $10 each for nonmembers. Announcements

The Rice Design Alliance is pleased to announce the winners of its third annual grants program, Initiatives for Houston. Taryn Kinney was awarded $5,000 for her proposal, HiRes Residual Highway. Keith Krumweide was awarded $2,500 for a lecture and exhibition entitled "Education through Form: The Schools and Home of Donald Barthelme." Patrick Peters was awarded $2,500 for an assessment of the work of the 12-year-old Graduate Design/Build Studio at UH that will serve as a manual for other schools and non-profit organizations.



Call for Entries

Pentagon Memorial Design Competition: On June 11, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers launched an open design competition for the Congressionally authorized outdoor memorial on the grounds of the Pentagon. What: Open, two-stage competition to select design for outdoor memorial. Where: On the grounds of the Pentagon near the impact site. Why: To honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon. Who: Any individual or team may enter. When: Deadline for submissions is Sept. 11, 2002. Electric Service Power Plant, which sits at the end of Main Street in Ames, Iowa, is holding the "Landmark Challenge." Architects, artists, lighting designers, landscape architects and university students are all invited to participate in the competition. The incentive is a $10,000 prize for the chosen concept. And up to five designs will be chosen as finalists for further exploration and a prize of $1,000 for each. The deadline for submission is Monday, December 2, 2002; finalists should be chosen by Friday, February 1, 2003, with the winner chosen in the summer of 2003. The Wood Design Awards invites entries to the 2002 Program, the only combined Program for U.S. and Canadian architects honoring design excellence in all types of buildings and interiors in which wood has significant use. Entries should consist of building projects that show a wide range of wood product applications and demonstrate an understanding of the special qualities of wood, such as strength, durability, beauty and economy.
