AIA Houston Annual Meeting

Mark your calendars for the Annual Meeting of AIA Houston on October 15, 2002, from 6 - 8 pm. While the location is not yet firm, the meeting will be held in a Midtown location and will include remarks about development in the area from one of the prominent players.

Business to be conducted at the meeting includes the election of 2003 officers and directors, presentation of Chapter Awards: Educator, Artist, Craftsman, and Chapter Citation.

Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture Fall Lecture Series

This series of talks, "Sense of Place," will take place at 6 pm in the Architecture Theater. AIA Continuing Education Credits are available for lecture attendance.

Exhibits, Workshops and Other Lectures:

September 19-October 13: "Design France: Generation 2001." This exhibit of French product design will be in the Architecture Gallery. French designer Alexis Tricoire will present his work and Gérard Laizé, Director of VIA (Valorization of innovation in furniture) will explain the new trends in French design and will give a free lecture on September 19, open to the public at 6 pm in the theater in the College of Architecture Building, at U of H. They will debate forms of design and issues such as: intellectual property, manufacturing, the pros and cons of integrated and external design departments, and the collaboration between design and craft (traditional skill trades).

October 15-November 20: "Five Modern Dallas Architects" will be on view in the Architecture Gallery.

All lectures are free and open to the public and, unless otherwise noted, take place at 6 pm in the Architecture Theater, Room 150, Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture. The Rice Design Alliance will host its 2002 Fall Lecture series, "Town and Country: Inventing the American City" on September 25.
The lectures include:
"Frederick Law Olmstead: Reform and Invention," October 9;
"Inventing Santa Fe: A Rusticated Urbanism," October 16;
"New Orleans and the Garden District: A New Urban Landscape," October 23.

The 2002 Joint Annual Conference of BOCA, ICBO and SBCCI will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth on September 29 - October 4. Code development hearings are open to the public free of charge. Other activities are available to delegates and their companions as part of the registration fee. Come participate in the only governmental consensus code development forum in the nation. The conference schedule includes more than 25 courses tailored to design and building professionals. At EXPO 2002, a variety of exhibits will be on display, featuring innovative products, new technology and related demonstrations. In addition to these learning opportunities, architects can participate in code development hearings on the ICC International Codes. H.E. Roland Eng, Ambassador of Cambodia to the U.S., Nancy A. Hawes, Executive Director, Asia Society Texas, and Mai Elliott, Vietnamese author and historian invite you to join them for "A Unique Journey to Cambodia and Vietnam" on October 24-November 5. This specially planned trip will focus on the cultural heritage, people, cuisines and crafts of these countries. The sixteenth annual Rice Design Alliance Gala will celebrate the double anniversaries of RDA's 30th year and the 20th year of the continuous publication of Cite: The Architecture and Design Review of Houston. The evening will include dinner, dancing and a silent auction. The gala will be Saturday, November 2, 7 pm at Reliant Stadium, 8400 Kirby Drive, on the club level of the stadium. Honorary Chairmen are Susan and Raymond Brochstein; Gala Chairmen are Dee Ann and Yandell Rogers, III; Underwriting Chairman is Jane Page; Auction Chairman is Cindy Reid; Environment Chairman is Lauren Rottet. It is anticipated that 1,000 architects, design professionals, engineers, contractors, and RDA members will attend this popular annual event.
