Joe Mashburn, AIA, dean of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, has received the Texas A&M University College of Architecture Outstanding Alumni Award. He was chosen for his distinguished career, both in the United States and in Australia, and for his logical sense of design. Mashburn was inducted into the University of Houston Architecture Hall of Fame in 1996 and became dean of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture in 1998.
James Vick, AIA, John Brandt, Peiwen Yu and Rebecca Straub have joined SWA Group's Houston office.
Jack A. Duran, AIA, has joined Turner & Bair Architects, LLP, as a senior associate / director of projects.
Out of a total 40 awards presented at this year's TASA/TASB Joint Annual Convention in Dallas, PBK was the recipient of 13 Design Awards for Excellence in Educational Architecture. PBK has also begun design development on a new, 55,000-square foot digital technology center for the North Harris Montgomery Community College System. The Humble Independent School District recently awarded PBK the new high school project included in their $230 million bond package (passed in September). PBK will handle planning, design, construction documents and construction administration for the new school to be built in the Atascocita area. They are also happy to welcome Chanta Randle, Art Lopez, Jander Ortiz and Felix Carrillo to their Houston office and announce the addition of an MEP Group to their Engineering Division. Headed by Mark Madorsky, PE, the MEP Group recently acquired engineers Scott Jones, Bryan Vavra and John Woodfin. In addition to MEP, PBK also offers an in-house Civil Group headed by Trey Schneider, PE, with engineers Scott Stuart and Jason Hull. Nina Hammoudeh recently joined PBK as a Senior Interior Designer.
Husmann & Associates Architects is pleased to announce that Steve Husmann has acquired his Puerto Rico license and the firm has been commissioned to design and document a 70,000 sf three story, above grade parking, office building.

Leonard G. Lane, Jr., AIA, a principal at Chelsea Architects, won First Place, Residential, Over 5,000 Square Feet in the recent 2002 Gulf Coast Chapter of ASID Interior Design Awards, a competition boasting 91 entries in 11 categories. Lane's partner on the project was Marlys Tokerud, ASID, of Tokerud & Co. Interior Design. Lane and Tokerud also captured a regional award in the 2000/2001 Sub-Zero/Wolf Kitchen Design Contest.
Kenneth R. Swanson, NCARB, AIA, has been promoted to Senior Vice President at FKP Architects. Nann Pearce, Controller of FKP Architects, Inc., has been promoted to the position of Senior Vice President. R. Craig Grassle, AIA, has been promoted to Vice President at FKP Architects, Inc. Robert E. Clark, AIA; Jesse Garcia, Jr.; and Michael C. McVay have been promoted to Senior Associate. FKP has recently been tapped for new projects in both the Galena Park and New Caney Independent School Districts. For the 11th year, FKP Architect's have dressed in costume and hosted a Halloween party for the children of The House of Tiny Treasures, Harris County's first licensed childcare center serving exclusively homeless children. The House of Tiny Treasures also received a donation of $10,000 from FKP to help the center recover from extensive damage caused during Tropical Storm Allison. The House of Tiny Treasures is run by the non-profit organization, SEARCH, and provides quality childcare to children ages 10 months through 5 years. Leland K. Turner, AIA, a Principal at FKP Architects, Inc., has been named to the firm's Board of Directors.
Conrad G. Walton, AIA Emeritus, founding principal of DCW Architects, Inc. retired on December 15, 2002. He will remain on the DCW Board as a Director. Conrad's new telephone number is 713-462-8265.
Worrell Design Group recently completed foodservice planning and design for foodservice facilities at the Allen Parkway Village Child Care Center with Rey de la Reza Architects, Inc. Other recent projects include planning and design for renovation of the servery at HCA's Spring Branch Medical Center, and design of the new South Dining Hall Food Court at Sam Houston State University with Brown Reynolds Watford Architects, Inc.
Hellmuth Obata + Kassabaum, Inc. (HOK) welcomes several new members to its design team including Paul Kiel (Senior Project Architect), Ron Smith (Senior Project Architect/Project Manager), Francisco Silva and Andrew Sheehan. HOK was recently awarded the new 350,000 SF Methodist Hospital - Sugarland and the new 350,000 SF Methodist Hospital - Willowbrook. In addition, HOK Healthcare was awarded the ER renovation and new Entry Pavilion & Patient Bed Tower for Christus St. Mary in Port Arthur, Texas. Construction has broken ground on several HOK projects including the new medical research facility for the Regional Academic Health Center on The University of Texas - Pan American campus.
Reh Burwell Partners has been retained by Aegis Mortgage Company to provide programming and interior design services for their new headquarters in the reserve at Westchase II. RBP is also pleased to announce that it has been retained by PULSE EFT to provide programming and interior design services for its new headquarters. Located in Chevron Tower, 1301 McKinney, a new 48,000 sf facility on the 25th and 26th floors is being designed to meet the growing needs of this electronic banking network firm.
Merritt on the River, designed by EDI Architecture, Inc. is complete. The 11 story, 227 unit luxury apartment community is the first cast-in-place concrete tunnel form structured parking garage with residential units located above built in the United States. The design utilizes efficient parking bay widths up and through the residential units to eliminate the traditional structural transfer deck between the parking garage and residential floors.
Charles B. Thomsen, FAIA, was selected as a Fellow of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). Thomsen, chairman of 3D/International, Inc., is also a Fellow of American Institute of Architects and the first to be selected to Fellowship in both organizations. Timothy Gunther, AIA, Senior Vice President of 3D/International, Inc. is retiring from a 30-year career during which he played a design role in more than 100 facilities throughout the United States, Middle East and Far East.
3D/International has begun construction on the Jack E. Brown Engineering Building at Texas A&M University, College Station campus and the Human Resources/Telecommunications Building at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas. They have been awarded the Science Building project at Texas Southern University which will house biology, chemistry, physics and computer science classrooms, a vivarium, and auditorium. 3D/I has also been selected by the US Department of Defense to assess and master plan Air Force dormitories world wide. The dedication of the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth at St. John's Methodist Church was recently performed downtown. The 6,000 sf project includes a regulation high school gymnasium, recording studio, and facilities for after-school programs.
Powers Brown Architecture would like to welcome back Megan Ebert. Megan worked with PBA during a nine-month internship program through her school. She rejoins PBA after returning to Kansas State University to complete her Bachelor's of Interior Architecture. Nazir Khalfe comes to PBA after completing his Masters in Architecture from the University of Central England. Nazir made the move to the United States after auditing Jeffrey Brown's Design Studio at the University of Houston. PBA has a number of projects under construction and nearing completion, including Prudential Gary Greene Realtors offices, Chamberlin Roofing Headquarters, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Katy.

Walter P. Moore announces that Gabriel A. Jimenez, PhD, PE, has joined the Structural Diagnostics Services Group as Senior Project Manager. ITS Texas, the Texas Chapter of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, has elected Mark Conway, PE, Managing Director of ITS for Walter P. Moore, as President of the ITS Texas Board of Directors for the year 2003. ITS Texas promotes and enhances public safety and welfare by fostering research, development and implementation of plan programs to reduce motor vehicle deaths and injuries, improve mobility and promote, encourage and advance a system of safer, more efficient, and environmentally sound highway transportation.
Mark A. Thompson, PE, Executive Vice President at Haynes Whaley Associates, recently earned the title of LEEDâ„¢ Accredited Professional, recognizing his knowledge of green building and the LEED Green Building Rating System.
