The AIA Houston Firm Award recognizes firms that have consistently produced distinguished architecture for a period of at least ten years. The jury considers design, firm organization, contributions to the profession and contributions to the community in its decision. The Award will be presented at Celebrate Architecture on April 16, 1999.
Taft Architects, organized in 1972, is a small office with a unique philosophy. The three partners work equally on the design and execution of each project. They take a limited number of projects at any one time to ensure careful attention to each by the partners. Their work is internationally recognized, with a proven record of satisfied clients and design excellence. Projects have been diverse in both scale and type and include a bath house for the Southside Place swimming pool, a range of residential projects, country club houses, a processing plant in France, and several schools including one in Columbus, Indiana, and the Rice School in Houston Independent School District.
Each partner is committed to architectural education. Casbarian is Associate Dean of the School of Architecture at Rice University; Samuels is Visiting Professor at Rice and Director of the Rice Building Workshop; Timme, currently on sabbatical from the firm, is Dean of Architecture at the University of Southern California. They have held appointments as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Yale, the University of Illinois, the University of Pennsylvania and Clemson University and received the AIA Houston Educator Award in 1991.
The firm has won more than 60 awards, including three consecutive Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects. The trio was elected to the AIA College of Fellows in 1991 and in 1985 were awarded the Advanced Fellowship in Architecture at the American Academy in Rome. Since 1981 they have served on 30 awards juries in the United States and Europe.
In mid March the new national television advertising campaign began on Today, Larry King Live, Good Morning America, and NBC Nightly News.
Based on more than three years of research and with several years of print ad experience, the campaign aims to do three things:
provide quick, easy access to more information.
Television will be reinforced by ten weeks of radio spots on Morning Edition (NPR) and print advertising in Forbes, Business Week, and Newsweek. At the same time, a consistent AIA look in Yellow Pages across the country is unfolding as the new books are issued and a new consumer web site is coming on line with links to the Chapter's E Directory.
While the program is an awareness and brand name campaign, not one to generate specific job leads, an increased interest in architecture and architecture firms is sure to be a side benefit. Be sure that your firm's information is up to date in the Chapter's E Directory. And consider buying your listing in the Yellow Pages within the Chapter's box. For information about either of these options, call the Chapter office.
If you don't watch TV a lot and want to be sure to see the ads, you may check aiaOnLine for the time or airing. Or come by the Chapter Office and look at the tape.

AIA California Council announces the "Housing the Next Ten Million" competition. The purpose of the competition is to illustrate alternatives for less land-intensive habitation models, support urban design implementation tools, and to help local decision-makers deal more effectively with the enormous potential growth of California's Central Valley. The competition consists of two phases: ideas competition and community implementation. Submissions are due May 21. Detailed competition information available in the Chapter office.
Southern Living is actively promoting the twelfth annual Southern Home Awards which recognizes new homes, additions, renovations, and restorations. Entry is open to homes located in Southern Living's primary circulation area, and all projects, including landscaping and interior furnishings, must be completed (but not before January 1, 1997). Completed entry binders must be posted by May 31, 1999. Entry forms and additional information available in the Chapter office.
Proposals
Metropolitan Community Church of the Resurrection is accepting proposals from architecture principals/firms to develop and implement a long term facilities design program.
The selected designer will provide architectural perspective across the scope of the Church's New Facility Project. Consultation, creativity, and design skill will be required in property acquisition, master site planning, renovation of acquired structures (if any), and design of new structures. The Project will produce spaces to include sanctuary, classrooms, meeting rooms, choir space, library, fellowship space, bookstore and office space.
Proposals should be accompanied by references and descriptions of representative work, and must be received in the Church office by April 5.
For more information, please contact Mr. J. Danilo Medina, Project Manager, or Ms. Joy Chandler, Design Chair, MCCR, 1909 Decatur street, Houston, 77007; telephone 713/861-9149.
