2001 Rowlett Lecture Showcases Legacy of CRS

In February 1996, the sun set on 50 years of architecture when Caudill Rowlett Scott, a one-time giant of the design and construction industry, closed the doors of its main architectural offices on the bank of Buffalo Bayou in Houston for the last time.

In February 2001, the spotlight will once again shine on CRS when the firm is the featured attraction in "Rowlett 2001: The Legacy of CRS," scheduled for Friday, February 16 at Rudder Theatre in College Station. Part of the annual John Miles Rowlett Lecture Series endowed through the Texas Architectural Foundation, the conference is sponsored by the CRS Center and the Texas A&M College of Architecture.

CRS, one of the most innovative architectural/engineering firms of its time, was known for its insightful, not to mention trendsetting, approach to design and construction. In most cases, the firm invented or refined many of today's commonplace processes and phrases, such as architectural programming, architecture by team and the troika concept, squatters and construction management/fast-track. Perhaps more importantly, CRS was renowned for its culture of creativity and its relentless focus on process as well as product.

This conference will explore the impact that CRS innovations and culture have had on the design and construction industry. Though still in the initial planning phases, it will feature presenters who began their careers at CRS and went on to become respected, national figures in the design and construction industry. The conference will conclude with a CRS reunion at the College Station Hilton and Conference Center.

Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA, Chairman and CEO of HKS Architects in Dallas and AIA President 2000, is one of the many CRS alumni currently putting into practice the lessons learned during his years spent with the firm.

"I have fond memories of my time with CRS," Skaggs said. "I carry to this day the core values of 'architecture by team,' the 'problem seeking' approach to programming, and the triad importance of 'Form, Function and Economy.'"

To pre-register for the conference or to obtain more information, visit the conference Web site at http.//Rowlett.tamu.edu or contact the College Communications Office at 979-847-8677.
