Wanted: Six Architects
From Rand Silverman, Chair, Residential Architecture Committee: Wanted: Six architects interested in promoting their work in the Greater Houston area with a special focus on between 750 and 1000 individuals viewing samples of your work. Promotional materials will be paid for by others, with your work receiving the endorsement of the AIA. The cost for this service is nothing other than your time.
Seven local architects took advantage of this unique marketing opportunity on May 4 and 5 as part of the 1997 Home Tour. We are now accepting submittals of projects for the 1998 tour. Projects may be new homes, or renovations/additions to existing homes. The general area of the tour will be determined based on the homes submitted, with a general focus being on areas inside the loop. For further information, contact Peggy Fortner at the AIA at 713-520-0155 or fax, 713-520-5134.

To celebrate the 19th anniversary of Ziegler Cooper Architects, Founding Principals Scott Ziegler and Michael Cooper, along with Principals Kurt Hull and Mark Nolen, founded Ziegler Cooper Initiatives.
As part of this initiative, Ziegler Cooper is presently working with the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast toward the compilation of a complete facilities evaluation of United Way's headquarters. According to Judith Craven, M.D., President of the United Way, "The Facilities Evaluation report is of incomparable value to the agency, in that it provides the basis for determining priority tasks to upgrade and dramatically improve the efficiency of the entire facility." A special committee is also reviewing the report to determine the best strategy for future capital expenditures, including the possibility of relocation.
Ziegler Cooper Initiatives' mission is to function as a catalyst to spearhead worthwhile public service programs within the community. The Initiative is charged with the mission of giving back to the Houston community.

Don't forget to record your Learning Units. By year end (a mere six months away) you will need to have logged in 36 units including 8 hours in Health, Safety and Welfare. Many of you have enough to carry over to your 1998 requirement; others are looking for ways to acquire them. Number of learning units earned and reported by Chapter members ranges from 0 - 693! Emeritus, Associate, and Affiliate members are not required to engage in continuing education but are welcome and encouraged to keep up with the ever changing profession. Interns, of course, are involved in the IDP program of planned learning.
You will receive a transcript of your credits this fall. To find out now how many you have recorded, get on line. Go to the Chapter's Web Page (aiahoutx.org) and click on Links. Then click on AIA OnLine; then Continuing Education. By entering your AIA member number you can access your record. The Chapter makes it easy for you to earn those lu's. Already most committees schedule educational portions of their monthly meetings. These are announced in Perspective flagged by the CES logo, which also appears on this page. In addition, the CES Scorecard in Perspective lets you know how many learning units are described in each issue.
But what if you can't make those meetings? Check the Table of Contents in Architectural Record. Each issue there is at least one continuing education opportunity (by correspondence). Look for the CES logo. AIArchitect does the same thing. NCARB has some self study materials. Use your self-report forms to record lectures you attend, books you read, research that you do, tapes you watch or listen to. Where are you going on vacation? Surely you will tour a building or two. Think about what you might learn from such a tour and record it. To be eligible for credit the activity must be planned, educational (rather than operational), and new knowledge for you. Then, just fax or mail your self-report form to the AIA/CES office at the University of Oklahoma.
AIA and McGraw Hill Construction Information Group have cooperated in providing a wide variety of materials useful to you in your practice. From newsletters with questions/answers, workshops-in-a-box, books, CD-ROMs, the information includes Construction Administration, Wind Design Basics, How to Develop the Strategic Plan, and Performance-Based Compensation—Getting Paid for Good Design and more. Some of those materials will be available in the library or you may call for an index of products.
Don't fall behind. Opportunities abound. Need a self report form? Call us (520-0155) and we will fax you one.
Now that we have a seminar room in our lovely new office, we plan to keep it busy. Watch for a full schedule of seminars—especially those with Health, Safety, Welfare content, since those credits must be earned in structured programs. We will have a reprise of the Code Seminar reviewing the amendments to Houston's Building Code; we will explore the new B141 when it's released. We also have a number of video and audio tapes in the library. You may come by to check them out, or watch and listen here. Watch your fax machine for announcements and look for a fall calendar of events in September.

One of the services already touted in this space is TSALink. Last time we talked about the usefulness of the information in setting bid dates, in getting a feel for trends in the industry, in tracking your own projects, in Internet access.
One thing we didn’t talk about is money. Link comes at no cost to you in dollars—just a little bit of your time to post information. The return to TSA from CMD, the financial backer of TSALink, is significant dollars. It is the largest source of non-dues revenue for TSA, yielding enough for TSA to offer a reduction in supplemental dues to firms that regularly enter and update construction information. That’s a good return on investment.
It may end, however. CMD has said that they plan to exercise their option to terminate the contract unless Texas architects dramatically increase their reports of early lead construction information. Business is really good in Texas. There should be lots of information on TSALink. But only you can provide it. If you are already linked, please start entering your information. If you have not yet established a link, call Andrew Hamlin at TSA for the software and some instructions about how to use it.
