The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) has released new study material to prepare for the computer-based Architect Registration Examination (ARE). The new study guide, Preparing for the Architect Registration Examination, includes a video and a book to guide candidates through the new exam, from testing environment to the software used, and the scoring and reporting process.
With the ARE now administered exclusively by computer, NCARB's study materials have been extensively revised to reflect these changes. The videotape provides a "look" at the ARE. The video shows a computer-based test center, a brief demonstration of the multiple-choice questions, and how each of the graphic divisions - Site Planning, Building, Planning and Building Technology - vignettes work.
The study guide sells for $85 (plus $5 for shipping and handling). Contact the Chapter office for detailed ordering information.

At a recent meeting of the TBAE board, it was voted to allow candidates to take all parts of the exam effective immediately, in an amount not to exceed $525, the limit imposed by the current appropriations bills. Any eligible applicant may take the exam whether or not he or she has already completed any parts. The applicant may take as many parts as $525 will allow.
The 1998-99 Appropriations Bill will take effect on September 1. This bill allows TBAE to offer the exam for the amount ($980) that NCARB currently charges. Call TBAE at 512-805-9000 for detailed information.

During the recent move, several boxes of "old" Sandcastle T-shirts were donated to Sheltering Arms. The Chapter office received the following note: "Just a note of thanks for the recent donation of T-shirts. What a great success. The members, volunteers and caregivers at both Day Centers have enjoyed the "surprises" so much: from bingo prizes, contests, games and birthday remembrances. Each person has said 'thanks, thanks, thanks.' I appreciate your kindness and brightening up our place.

Chapter Sponsors Town Meeting on KUHT Houston Public Televition
In August AIA Houston, in collaboration with KUHT
Houston Public Television, will present an evening of
programming focused on the urban environment and its
relationship to public policy. This community outreach
initiative is intended to raise public awareness of the
importance of planning and thoughtful design in shaping
the city, as well as to introduce these issues into the
campaigns for Mayor and City Council.
The evening will begin with a broadcast of Back from
the Brink: Saving America’s Cities by Design, a
one-hour documentary produced by the American
Architectural Foundation to demonstrate that America’s
urban problems can be addressed. Following the
documentary will be a locally produced hour-long Town
Meeting with live audience and viewer call in. This
segment will seek to raise questions, explore
solutions, and engage the voting public in conversation
about the issues raised in Back from the Brink and
their application to Houston. It will suggest that
would-be leaders of Houston should be asked to explain
their urban policies and to consider the economics of
sprawl, the effects of regional cooperation, and the
role of city government in enhancing quality of life
for its citizens.
The project has received grants from the American
Architectural Foundation, the Houston Architecture
Foundation, and the AIA College of Fellows. Additional
sponsorships are being sought from architecture firms
and other Houston civic and business leaders. If you
would like to see your firm’s name on the screen, call
the Chapter office for information.
Tune in to Channel 8 on August 20. Call in with your
questions and comments. Invite your neighbors to watch
the program with you. Challenge your favorite
candidate for city office to consider these very
important issues. This is an opportunity for
architects to take the initiative in framing the debate
in this fall’s elections. Seize it.
