Recent actions by the Texas Legislature and the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners have removed the obstacles to taking the Architectural Registration Examination. Starting now, qualified candidates may take all parts of the exam not to exceed a total cost of $525 (the current statutory limit). Beginning in September, when the new appropriations bill goes into effect, candidates may take all parts of the exam. There are two testing sites in Houston: one in West U (713-528-7653) and one in Clear Lake (713-488-6144). The National Council of Architectural Registrations Boards (NCARB) has released new study guides—a video and book. The video includes a view of a computer-based test center, a brief demonstration of the multiple-choice questions, and a look at how the Site Planning, Building, Planning and Building Technology vignettes work. The study guide sells for $85 (plus $5 for shipping and handling). Order information is available in the Chapter office. The Chapter will host an ARE Seminar on Thursday, July 17, beginning at 5:45 pm in the Chapter office. Cathy Hendricks, Executive Director of the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners; Stephen Nutt, NCARB’s Manager for the ARE, and Mike Gaertner, AIA, will give an overview of the exam, complete with tips for preparation. The cost of the seminar will include the NCARB study guide. All eligible candidates will receive a seminar description and reservation information in the mail. For a copy, call 520-5138.
