ARE Application Procedures
If you are nearing completion of the IDP program, follow these steps to initiate the application procedure to take the Architecture Registration Examination (ARE).
First, contact the architectural registration board in the state where you are seeking registration. In Texas, the number is 512-305-9000. Addresses and phone numbers for all Boards are listed on the NCARB web site, www.ncarb.org/stateboards. Inform the Board that NCARB is forwarding your IDP Council Record, and inquire about any special procedures, forms or fees specific to that state.
Then send a written request to NCARB to authorize sending of your IDP record to the state board. Submit the letter of authorization at least three months before you would like to schedule your exam.
Your state registration board will then review your qualifications as shown in your NCARB IDP Record and inform you of your eligibility to take the ARE. At that time, you call the test center to schedule your examinations. A list of test centers is at www.ncarb.org/are/testcenters.html.
Detailed information about the application procedure is available in the Chapter office.
NCARB Notes
Mark McKechnie has joined NCARB's staff as the new Director of Professional Development. He is assuming overall responsibility for the ARE Examination.
The "Summit on Architectural Internship," held in April, was a meeting of architects, interns, and representatives from five collateral architectural organizations to discuss the transition from architectural education to architectural practice. Items discussed included allowing the registration exam to be taken upon graduation from an accredited degree program, reconsidering the term "intern," and a consideration of alternative paths to practical experience.

Houston Architectural Guide, second edition
Reserve your copy now of the new, revised, and expanded guidebook to Houston. The second edition of Houston Architectural Guide, with text by Stephen Fox and photography by Gerald Moorhead, FAIA, will be available in July 1999, with a $20 cover price. You may reserve your copy at the 1990 price of $15, plus tax.
