Executive Director's Letter

It's get serious time on Continuing Education. August 1 is the absolute deadline for completing and filing CES credits for 1997. That's 36 learning units including 8 contact hours of Health, Safety, Welfare information. Architects who do not complete the requirement will experience a lapse in membership at the end of 1999. Reinstatement will require 18 learning units in hand. The deadline for completing 1998 requirements is August 1, 2000.

Even if you haven't filed anything yet, you can still do it. Accumulated credits can be filed either online (AIAOnline.org) or on paper. The Chapter office can supply you with Self Report forms. Check the Continuing Education Calendar for seminars you might be interested in. Pick up a few back issues of Architectural Record, read the CES highlighted articles, take the quiz, and file your report. Order a monograph from NCARB (ncarb.org); you'll earn lots of lu's and they also qualify for HSW.

Since the Legislature just amended the Architect's Practice Act to require continuing education for renewal of licensing, effective in 2000, you can kill two birds with one stone. While TBAE hasn't written the rules yet, all states that require continuing education accept AIA transcripts. Not all states have the same expectations and some require additional confirmation regarding HSW. AIA's program, however, is becoming a common denominator for the states. It's your most economical, convenient way to meet most state requirements.

If you have questions or want more suggestions about how to meet the requirements by the deadline, please call me or Peggy Fortner at the Chapter office. It's late, but it's not yet too late.
