    NCARB News

Registered architects may now obtain registration instructions and submit transmittal request forms for 36 U.S. jurisdictions and all 10 Canadian provinces at the NCARB web site, www.ncarb.org/forms/req_tran.html. Seventeen states have recently adopted the "Uniform Application" for registering architects, making it possible for architects to use the same application form for each of those 17 states. In most cases, the transmittal process requires the completion of two forms: the "Request for Transmittal" (Form 182) and the "Uniform Application" (Form 308) or the state-specific application. After completing and submitting Form 182 online, NCARB checks the applicant's Council Record for currency and accuracy, and the applicant is notified by email of any problems. For more information on NCARB forms, call 202/783-6500.

NCARB has begun an in-depth study of the profession that will reveal trends and state-of-the-art practices in architecture. The "Practice Analysis" study involves four major research components: focus groups, work observations, critical incident interviews, and a 4000-architec survey. Results of the current study are expected to be in draft stage by October 2000 and published in early 2001.

The digital version permits readers to search the 2,000 page handbook rapidly by key word or topic. Although the text cannot be altered (contracts include the notation, "sample" which cannot be deleted), pages can be easily printed for reference.

The Handbook is being revised, with the new edition available mid-1999. A limited number of the 4-volume sets are still available in the Chapter office. The new CD-ROM version is also available. The cost of either version is $225.
