Lockwood Andrews & Newnam has designed the 9,200 sf expansion to the existing campus of Rohm and Haas Process Chemical Laboratory facility in Deer Park. The expansion consists of two laboratories, six offices, a lunchroom and other related facilities. Brookstone Corporation is the general contractor.

Virginia W. Kelsey, AIA, announces the completion of the Jewett Residence.

Robert Morrisey, AIA, has become a Partner in JRS Architect, and Joseph Pignataro, AIA, has been named Associate.

Hy Applebaum, AIA, has been elected to a two-year seat on the PIA Executive Committee. He was Chairman of the Small Project Forum PIA and served three years as a members of that committee's Advisory Group.

Pierce Goodwin Alexander & Linville is pleased to announce the promotion of David Moss, AIA, to Senior Associate.

Gracie Jones, AIA, Peter Justl, AIA, James Davis, Les Hiebert, John Smith, and Brett Wilbur have joined Hermes Reed Architects as Architects and John Smith and Brett Wilbur are new Managers.

John K. Spear, AIA, is serving as Vice Chair of the Housing Professional Interest Area (PIA) Advisory Group, and is the chair-elect for 2001.

PageSoutherlandPage has named Arturo Chavez as a partner of the firm.

Roger Cooner, AIA, has joined Curtis & Windham Architects.

SHW Group and Texas A&M have developed a semester-long school design competition to design a high school with a capacity for 2000 students. Twenty-eight students are involved in the competition.

Kendall Heaton Associates announces the promotion of Thomas Milholland, AIA, to Associate.

Mark Kaufman, AIA, spoke on "Designs for the First-Time Homebuyer" at the January NAHB International Builders' Show in Dallas.

World Architecture named Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum as the largest practice in the world based on the number of fee-earning architects. The firm was received AIA's Award for Excellence in Education in the large firm category, recognizing the firm's commitment to developing high quality continuing education programs through their development of an internal university program.

Michael Stanton, FAIA, AIA President, announced that Gensler is the recipient of the Year 2000 Architecture Firm Award, the AIA's highest honor to a firm that has consistently produced distinguished architecture. Stanton noted that "Gensler has led our profession in bringing sustainability into mainstream corporate practice." James E. Furr, FAIA, is managing Principal of Gensler's Houston office.

The Fourth Ward Revitalization Plan was recognized by the Boston Society of Architect's Annual Honor Awards Program for Design Excellence. W.O. Neuhaus Associates was the local architectural consultant.

Rey de la Reza Architects received three of the five 1999 Highest Honor Awards for Outstanding Urban Planning from the American Planning Association, Houston Selection. The firm was recognized for Enhancing Public Spaces: Cotswald 2000, the University of Houston: Downtown Physical Image/Sense of Place Campus Development Plan, and the Green Ribbon Project, an Aesthetics and Landscape Master Plan for Houston's freeway corridors. Alison Boyles, AIA, has been promoted to Senior Associate, and Erick Ragni, Associate AIA, to Associate. Stan Hargus, AIA, has joined the firm as Senior Project Manager, and F. Sabir, Associate AIA, has returned to the firm as Associate.

Henry Hermis, Jr., AIA, announces that American Construction Investigations has contracted with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to review and inspect publicly funded projects, as well as privately funded projects, for compliance with the Texas Accessibility Standards. Julio Garcia and Douglas Muery have joined the firm's TAS plan review and inspections division.

Jackson & Ryan Architects has been selected as the architect for the Master Plan for a conference resort in Dripping Springs, the Needs Assessment Study for Lord of Life Lutheran Church in The Woodlands, and the conversion of the Pickwick Hotel in San Francisco into a Wyndham Malmasion Hotel.

Worrell Design Group is collaborating with Ziegler Cooper Architects in the design of the new corporate dining facilities for Chase Bank Call Center in Arlington, Texas, and the new Cafetorium of the Kincaid Lower School. The firm is collaborating with Gensler in the design of foodservice support areas for DePelchin's Children Center.

Seeberger + Associates, Inc. announces the addition of Vincent Grizzaffi, AIA, as Construction Administration Consultant. The firm has completed the design and construction administration of 19 TravelCenters in nine states for Williams Express and has been selected as Architect for the design of two buildings totaling 240,000 sf in the Central Green Distribution Center in Houston.

Blair Hamilton, AIA, has been promoted to Associate of Bay Architects. He is currently working on a new high school in Alief ISD with a construction cost totaling over $48,000,000.

Roger Soto, AIA, was a juror in the New Orleans AIA 1999 Annual Design Awards in January. He is Senior Vice President and Design Director at HOK.

Dwayne Mollard, AIA, of Professional Design Group announces the firm's selection to complete the Master Plan for St. Pius X High School. The firm was also selected for an ID/IQ Contract with USPS in Los Angeles, and is providing architectural services to Washington Mutual in both California and Texas.

The new address of Harry Gendel Architects is 1807 Decatur, Houston, Texas 77007, in the Philip M. Helfrich House of the Old Sixth Ward Historic District.

PBK Architects' Houston office will assist Royal ISD with the development of a high school field house and future plans for the construction of a new elementary school. Houston ISD has retained their services to design the new Pin Oak Middle School, due for completion in early 2002.




In Memory


Graham Jackson, FAIA, FCSI, died October 16, 1999. A 1935 graduate of Rice Institute, he served as AIA Houston's President in 1958-59. He was a principal in the firm of Wirtz Calhoun Tungate & Jackson, and a recipient of the CSI President's Plaque. He is survived by his wife, Violet Stephen Jackson.

E. Kelly Gaffney, AIA, died on December 31, 1999. He was an architect in Houston for fifty years, and designed many churches, banks, and residences in Houston and the outlying cities. He is survived by his wife, Sara Burns Gaffney, and a daughter.

Edmund Furley, AIA, died January 21 after a brief illness. He was the first graduate of the University of Houston College of Architecture, where he taught for thirty-four years, retiring as professor/associate Dean Emeritus. He was a member of the firm McKin, Green and Furley. He is survived by his wife, Effie Jane Furley, and three daughters.

Milton B. McGinty, FAIA, died on January 28. He was one of the first graduates of Rice, President of AIA Houston, 1940-42, and a member of the National Board. He helped found the Texas Society of Architects and, in 1947, served as its President. In 1977, he received TSA's Pitts Award for Exemplary Performance as an Architect and for Dedicated Service to the Profession. At Rice, he won the first Rice Traveling Fellowship. He is survived by three sons and a daughter. Two of his sons are architects: John McGinty, FAIA, served as the Institute President in 1977, and Milton McGinty, Jr., AIA.

Satterfield & Pontikes Construction announces the appointment of Curtis W. Martin as president. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he has served on the Emory Law School Trial Techniques Program and is a founding partner of the law firm, Griffin Cochrane & Marshall, in Atlanta.

Klotz Associates announces that Keith Bille, PE, Larry Smalley, PE, and Harvey Treybig, PE, have been named shareholders of the consulting engineering firm.

FMB Design announces its selection for a graphic program for a new business park and distribution center, Crossroads Business Park, for Trammel Crow Company in Charlotte, North Carolina. Services include logo design and tenant graphic development.

Brookstone Corporation has been selected as the general contractor for an 18,000 sf expansion of Continental Airlines' existing ground service equipment maintenance facility at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
