Environmental Committee
To enroll Houston Architects in environmental preservation and provide a resource structure to encourage environmentally sound design and construction practices.
Wednesday, May 12
Chapter office, noon
In November, the Environmental Committee will host the REUSE Competition.. The competition is to build the ultimate two-person shelter constructed of newspapers. The intent is to demonstrate that today's waste can be tomorrow's building material. Awards will be provided to teams and individuals and fun should be had by all. The committee is now looking for kindred sponsors, such as manufacturers of recycled products, to participate. We met last month to build mock-ups of newspaper shelters and found that the creative possibilities are great. We need your help to keep the project moving. Please call Mark Horvath, 713/877-1192, or Duane Bradshaw, 281/568-6113 to get involved.

The Environmental Committee is participating with the Habitat for Humanity Committee of the AIA on a new set of standards for their houses. Did you realize that Habitat throughout the USA is the nation's third largest home builder? This is an exciting opportunity to affect the lives of a lot of people. If you can help in any of the various sub-committees, please call Gerald Moorhead, 713/529-6905 or Duane Bradshaw, 281/568-6113.

We are tentatively planning to have Dupont present their products - floor covering, recycled and environmentally sensitive materials - at the May meeting, and will fax out more information as the plans become final. Please mark your calendar.

Interior Architecture Committee
To offer a forum for enhancing design excellence in Interior Architecture and to further awareness of Interior Design throughout the community.
Wednesday, May 7
Offices of Irvine Associates, 3 Riverway

Please note that, because of the relocation of the AIA office, the May meeting location has moved. Contact Anissa Zicker, AIA, at 713/840-1880 if you plan to attend and to order lunch.

The long anticipated re-inauguration of the 1997 AIA/Interior Architecture Committee is now in full swing. Our committee has initiated three projects for 1997 in addition to scheduling design tours beginning in May. 1997 projects include:

Houston Interiors Book. We are in the investigation and information gathering phase of publishing a compilation of Houston interiors projects, circa 1950 to present. Our goal is to document great projects from the past that are lost to us now and record the ever changing face of design in Houston. In the past, we have had world renowned architects practice in Houston, and we continue to have the most outstanding and accomplished architects designing interiors in this town. We need a record of all the great work that has been completed here. Anyone interested in assisting in this retro-historical project please contact Anissa Zickler, AIA, 713/840-1880.

Mentoring Program. We are developing a mentoring program for recent graduates. The intent is to give the interns new avenues for learning this profession and for making contacts after graduation. Please contact ReNae Scott, AIA, 713/974-3565, if you are interested in this program.

Tours. We have several tour options in the works. Please contact Russ Fabiani, 803-0083 ext. 201, if you have a project you would like to show off or know of something around town you think merits a visit.

Micro Firm Roundtable
Monday, May 12
Chapter office, 11:30 am
LU's for attending
RSVP, 713/622-6261

HOW DO YOU RATE YOUR CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS? This month's meeting will focus on the ability to properly communicate to the contracting industry. Our speaker is Martin Rogers with the Alliance Construction Company, a small, commercial contractor that does churches, office buildings and small commercial projects. He will address (1) what contractors look for in a set of drawings, (2) what they need in a set of drawings, (3) what confuses them, and (4) redundancies in a set of drawings. Mr. Rogers is looking forward to having a question and answer period with this presentation. This will be the most provocative and informative program we have had to-date.
