Virginia Kelsey, AIA, Named Young Architect
The Young Architects Award was created to recognize excellence in ability and exceptional contributions by architects who are under 40 years of age or are in their first ten years of practice. The 1997 winner of this ward is Virginia Kelsey, AIA, a sole practitioner specializing in residential design.
In addition to a significant body of work of her own, Kelsey has collaborated with other firms including Tom Wilson + Architects and the Women's Institute and is a frequent speaker for civic organizations. She is President of the Woodway Pines Homeowners Association and is working with neighborhood groups to understand the revisions currently underway on the Development Ordinance.
Forthright, intelligent, creative, independent thinker, careful, principled-these qualities have earned Virginia Kelsey the respect of her colleagues, her clients, her students, and the civic leaders with whom she works. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and participated in summer programs at Oxford and Versailles.
The jury included Suzanne Labarthe, AIA, Past President of AIA Houston, Lars Lerup, Dean, Rice University School of Architecture, and Tim Conroy, AIA, the 1996 Young Architect.

AIA Works For You
LegaLine is a program from the AIA Trust which allows AIA members to have prompt access to practice-related legal information, by telephone, as often as they need it, on an annual subscription basis. It is designed to allow members to discuss matters affecting risk management and practice management with architects who are also attorneys and are intimately familiar with the current issues in architectural practice.
As a NEW SERVICE TO MEMBERS, AIA Houston has purchased a subscription to LegaLine. If you have a practice problem or a question about AIA documents or a copyright question and think that a conversation with someone who understands both architecture and the law would help, call the Chapter office for a referral to LegaLine. It will cost you nothing. You will receive help with your question as well as some information about how your own subscription might be beneficial to your practice. Members are limited to one free call; the length of the call depends on the complexity of your question.
LegaLine staff is headed by Charles R. Hewer, FAIA, Esq. He is the author of the AIA Handbook Chapters on the Owner-Architect Agreements and Construction Agreements and he wrote the Commentaries on B141 and A201 for the AIA. He is also the author of Means Legal Reference for Design and Construction. He is a member of the AIA Documents Committee and has conducted seminars nationally for AIA and others on contract documents and risk management.

Douglas/Gallagher, Inc. a Houston-based design firm, has selected a local child advocacy organization, Justice for Children, as one of its charitable projects. In addition to redesigning Justice for Children's corporate image and logo, Douglas/Gallagher has assisted in fundraising and been instrumental in developing Justice for Children's newsletter (which goes to thousands of elected officials and concerned citizens around the country) into a powerful and effective advocacy tool for the group.
According to Douglas/Gallagher Partner Frank F. Douglas, FAIA, "Child abuse is a problem that affects all of us and touches many of those whom we know. As a company that is interested in the quality of life in our community, we decided that working with Justice for Children was an important cause which demanded serious commitment from us. We are happy to have made a difference in the way the organization presents itself and to have contributed to its effectiveness."
Douglas/Gallagher's involvement began when its Chief Operating Officer, Paula Patrick, saw the lead story about Justice for Children on ABC's PrimeTime Live. Afterward, she contacted the organization and offered the assistance of Douglas/Gallagher. Since then, Ms. Patrick has joined the Board of Justice for Children and has continued to actively support its activities including coordinating Douglas]/Gallagher's volunteer efforts.
Justice for Children is a 501(c )(3) non-profit corporation which started in Houston in 1987 and has grown to include chapters in nine other states. Its focus is to make sure that the system of governmental agencies responsible for protecting children works. Justice for Children also works with elected officials to make the system more protective of the rights, safety, and well-being of children. Anyone interested in this organization should call the Justice for Children headquarters at 713/255-HELP (4357).
