Design Study Tour: Symonds Lab

The Gardiner Symonds Laboratory is a state-of-the-art teaching laboratory in the Fondren Library at Rice University. Growing from work environment research and direct interviews with proven instructors, it was designed as an experimental facility for the synthesis of new learning models and resources. It is now in almost in constant use by a variety of university curricula.

Mark Wamble is the architect for the Gardiner Symonds laboratory. He has been involved in the project from its beginning. On November 10, Mark will give us an informal tour of the facility to describe the design goals and design process, as well as some of the research, used to construct this new learning experience. Space will be limited. Mark is with Willis, Bricker & Cannady in Houston, and is an adjunct professor of architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Contract Administration Series: Field

This seminar addresses construction contract administration conditions relevant to the architect's services on the job site, administering the contract and evaluating the work as it progresses. Participants learn to respond to contractor's list of proposed subcontractors; evaluate a contractor's application for payment, and determine their role in adjudicating claims, identify the steps in making and resolving claims; and define the architect's responsibility for certifying substantial and final completion.

Masonry Wall Systems

Participants will become familiar with masonry wall systems, water repellency, insulation and flashing design for moisture control, both residential and commercial. Stan Harris, of Eagle Concrete Products, is joined by Ron Brennan of WR Grace Masonry Division, a member of the Corps of Engineers and a frequent speaker for ASCE and CSI programs.

Accessibility and the TDLR

Teresa Darr, AIA, and Doug Darr of Accessibility Check provide an overview of the Texas Accessibility Standards (TAS), focusing on the most commonly missed items, misunderstandings, current interpretations, and suggested tips. The Darrs are architects and Independent Contract Providers doing plan review and inspections for TDLR since 1995. Participants are asked to bring their copy of TAS.

Bid Day Confusion

This seminar examines the bid process in today's market and reviews steps in the process that often lead to bid day confusion. Participants will learn, from the contractor's perspective, how bid forms affect bids, how actual bids are evaluated, and how to receive the best bid. Steve Skabla, Jr., is the Chief Estimator for Vaughn Construction and a member of the AIA/AGC joint committee. Steve Percival, President of Durotech, Inc., General Contractor, has extensive background in estimating, bid day procedures, and computerized estimating functions.
