ARE Application Procedures

If you are nearing completion of the IDP program, follow these steps to initiate the application procedure to take the Architecture Registration Examination (ARE).

First, contact the architectural registration board in the state where you are seeking registration. In Texas, the number is 512-305-9000. Addresses and phone numbers for all Boards are listed on the NCARB web site, www.ncarb.org/stateboards. Inform the Board that NCARB is forwarding your IDP Council Record, and inquire about any special procedures, forms or fees specific to that state.

Then send a written request to NCARB to authorize sending of your IDP record to the state board. Submit the letter of authorization at least three months before you would like to schedule your exam.

Your state registration board will then review your qualifications as shown in your NCARB IDP Record and inform you of your eligibility to take the ARE. At that time, you call the test center to schedule your examinations. A list of test centers is at www.ncarb.org/are/testcenters.html.

Detailed information about the application procedure is available in the Chapter office.

Architect's Handbook Available on CD-ROM

The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice (12th Edition) is now available on CD-ROM. Like the familiar four-volume set, it contains sample copies of all AIA contract documents. The digital version permits readers to search the 2,000 page handbook rapidly by key word or topic. Although the text cannot be altered (contracts include the notation, "sample" which cannot be deleted), pages can be easily printed for reference.

The Handbook is being revised, with the new edition available mid-1999. A limited number of the 4-volume sets are still available in the Chapter office. The new CD-ROM version is also available. The cost of either version is $225.
