ARE Application Procedures
If you are nearing completion of the IDP program, follow these steps to initiate the application procedure to take the Architecture Registration Examination (ARE).
First, contact the architectural registration board in the state where you are seeking registration. In Texas, the number is 512-305-9000. Addresses and phone numbers for all Boards are listed on the NCARB web site, www.ncarb.org/stateboards. Inform the Board that NCARB is forwarding your IDP Council Record, and inquire about any special procedures, forms or fees specific to that state.
Then send a written request to NCARB to authorize sending of your IDP record to the state board. Submit the letter of authorization at least three months before you would like to schedule your exam.
Your state registration board will then review your qualifications as shown in your NCARB IDP Record and inform you of your eligibility to take the ARE. At that time, you call the test center to schedule your examinations. A list of test centers is at www.ncarb.org/are/testcenters.html.
Detailed information about the application procedure is available in the Chapter office.
NCARB News
Delegates representing NCARB's 55 member board voted recently to ratify a two-phase Cooperation Agreement that sets in motion a step-by-step process for establishing mutual recognition of architects between the U.S. and the People's Republic of China. The agreement builds upon earlier conversations with the National Administration Board of Architectural Registration (NABAR), NCARB's Chinese counterpart.
At the NCARB Annual Meeting and Conference, the Board voted to lift the sunset provision on the Broadly Experienced Architect (BEA) alternative for satisfying the NCARB education standard. With the program continuing beyond July 1, 2000, architects who do not hold a degree that is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) may take advantage of the BEA avenue to NCARB certification indefinitely.
Joseph P. Giattinia, Jr., of Birmingham, Alabama, was installed as NCARB President.
